Under the plan described by the Superintendent, secondary students would work predominantly asynchronously, with brief check-ins: "They'll have 10 to 15 minutes. Teachers will give directions and assignment, maybe review a problem. Students will work asynchronously. Teachers will be available at various hours throughout the day, to check-in." For elementary grades (kindergarten through grade 6), the Superintendent said the district will schedule a 30-minute live session in the morning (likely math or English language arts), a midday asynchronous period, and a 30-minute session after lunch covering the other subject. Paraprofessionals and special-area teachers will post assignments and be available for student check-ins.
The Superintendent said the district plans to communicate procedures on the website, use Canvas for materials and instruction, and "maybe we'll even send home physical materials for kids too as provided we have the notice." A board member noted a typographical error in the subject line of the application document — the member said it read "financial instruction day application" and should read "flexible instruction day application." The comment was recorded but did not change the board's motion to approve.
A motion to approve (item 05/2001) was made and seconded; the board voted 6 in favor and 1 opposed. No public commenters addressed the two voting items before the votes.
The approved application will be transmitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for review; the board did not specify an exact PDE submission date during the discussion.
