The Newnan City Council voted unanimously to move forward with an application for the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Grant to develop an arboretum on an underdeveloped parcel north of Fourth Street extension between Sunset Lane and Boone Drive, just south of Ruth Hill Elementary.
City manager Cletus Phillips told council phase 1 work — including environmental assessments and paperwork — would likely cost in the range of $1,500 to $2,500 for initial steps, but that hiring a professional grant writer could cost as much as $30,000. Mayor Keith Brady said he would like the city to seek a qualified grant writer. Phillips said some grant-writing costs might be reimbursed from a grant award but could require up-front general-fund spending.
Staff noted that even if the city is not awarded the grant, the documents produced during the application would help the city in developing an arboretum and in later funding requests. Council voted unanimously to apply and directed staff to bring clarified financial details back to council.
