Board approves elementary collaboration and planning schedule; trustees ask about half-day vs. full-day impacts

The Manitowoc School District board approved a plan to create regular elementary collaboration and planning time that includes several half-day meetings and three full-day sessions in months without scheduled district professional development.

Presenter (elementary programs staff) explained the three full-day sessions occur in months that lack a district professional development day so staff would have an opportunity to meet; the half days fall in months that already have a scheduled PD day. "It's because those are days with those are months with no PD day on the calendar, so there's no opportunity to meet for any staff," the presenter said.

A trustee asked whether the three full days meant all staff would be on campus those days and raised concerns about parent logistics when schedules change. Another trustee asked whether the district had reached out to the union; staff replied, "We did not reach out to them on this topic." Trustees said the plan starts with half days to reduce parent burden and that the district would monitor how the schedule affects families.

Staff described the action as authorizing an amendment to the calendar so families can be notified quickly; the board approved the item by voice vote. Staff said they will monitor the schedule's effects and bring any needed calendar changes back to the board.
