EPA Region 9 outlines Brownfields assessment, cleanup and job-training grants

Brooklyn James of U.S. EPA Region 9 outlined the Brownfields program, including free targeted brownfields assessment technical assistance and competitive grants for assessment, cleanup, multipurpose revitalization and job training.
James explained that a Brownfield is property affected by real or perceived contamination and that EPA assistance can convert blighted sites into parks, housing or mixed-use developments. She summarized FY25 competitive award sizes and said the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has substantially increased available funding and allowed EPA to waive cost‑share requirements for certain grants.
Technical assistance and grants: The Targeted Brownfields Assessment program provides free contractor assessments (Phase I/II) and cleanup options with cost estimates and community outreach; requests are accepted year-round. Competitive assessment grants (community-wide, coalition, and state/tribal) and cleanup grants (three funding pools up to $500,000, $2 million and $4 million in the prior cycle) will open again in the fall. EPA also expects to offer multipurpose grants (assess and cleanup in one award) and job-training grants that fund workforce development for environmental remediation roles.
Practical steps: James encouraged applicants to use the EPA calendar to schedule one-on-one conversations with regional staff, to check FY25 selectees as examples, and to attend the breakout rooms for project-specific questions.
