The Canyons School District Board of Education advanced the naming and branding discussion for the district's planned Innovation Center on June 3, but took no formal naming vote, directing staff to return to the board with refined options at the June 17 meeting.
Board members heard a second-reading update from Superintendent Rick Robbins and Kirsten Stewart, associate director of communications, who reviewed stakeholder input, student work-group contributions and renderings from consulting firms. Stewart said the project team "would hope to maybe bring some final options to the board on June 17 for consideration." The board then asked staff to develop modifiers and branding options for its top name contenders.
The discussion focused on names and visual themes that reflect the project's emphasis on discovery, energy and collaborative learning. Stewart described the branding brief and work with outside partners, including Gardner Design and the architecture/visualization work from MHTN, and outlined a target timeline that includes a planned groundbreaking ceremony in October. She said students from multiple high schools participated in the naming work group and that many of those students contributed ideas before graduating this spring.
Vice President Oakes proposed a new, simpler name during the meeting: "what if we named it the wave?" She described the image of waves coming together to amplify energy and motion and said the word could be easily translated into a visual logo. Board member Dolly and others supported adding The Wave to the list of contenders during the roundtable discussion.
Presenters and board members listed a series of candidate names and themes that the board is now asking staff to refine with brand modifiers. Names discussed included Synergy/Synergex, Nexus, Confluence, Amplus, Synergix, Spectra, Spectrotech, Prisma, Loomis, Forge and the newly added The Wave. Stewart said some names rose to the top in earlier rounds (Synergy, Nexus and Confluence) and that working names could be strengthened with modifiers if needed.
The board did not take a formal vote to select a final name. Instead, the board moved into a behind-the-table roundtable to continue the discussion and directed staff to return with developed options and visualizations. Stewart also noted the team’s hope to align a name unveiling with an October groundbreaking but said the timeline is not fixed.
The naming discussion was characterized as a second reading; no binding action or formal adoption occurred during the June 3 meeting. The district will return the issue to the public board agenda on June 17 for further consideration.
