The Hingham School Committee voted June 2 to award a contract to RAD Sports for $336,125 to handle site preparation and installation of the Hingham High School athletic turf and authorized the superintendent to sign the contract on behalf of the committee.
Business Director Ayesha Upong told the committee the town approved an $880,000 appropriation at annual town meeting for turf replacement. To reduce schedule risk from manufacturer lead times, district staff split the project into two procurements: a purchase order for turf material with Shaw and a separate bid for site preparation and installation. The district has submitted a testing protocol to the manufacturer and engaged consultants to confirm testing procedures.
The installation bid opened after the procurement documents were posted; RAD Sports submitted the lowest responsive installation bid and was selected by the district working group, which included facilities and athletic staff. Committee members asked about the project schedule and testing contingencies. District staff said the installation contract requires completion by September 1 (with a short buffer before school) to be ready for regular season play, acknowledging that summer camps and tryouts could be affected if the schedule slips.
Regarding safety testing, the business director said Shaw’s product had previously tested well below EPA levels in other districts and that the manufacturer has indicated the raw materials and manufacturing processes have not changed. Nonetheless, the district is redoing testing as due diligence and has the testing protocol under review by the district’s consultant and town counsel.
A motion to award the installation contract and authorize the superintendent to execute it passed without recorded opposition. The committee packet shows the purchase order for turf materials has been placed with Shaw and that final installation contract language will be reviewed by counsel before execution.
