FLVS highlights internships, STEM camps and its largest graduating class in board meeting report

The FLVS Foundation told trustees that four FLVS juniors were selected from about 40 applicants for paid internships with Lockheed Martin in Clearwater, and that the foundation will again host two weeks of STARBASE STEM camps this summer.
Beth Bruner, executive director of the FLVS Foundation, said the foundation also ran five virtual professional-development sessions for about 25 teachers this year through a Consortium for Florida Education Foundation grant, hosted a student teacher think tank to plan lab space and technology for STEM learning, and held a student-art showcase and reception May 29 at the Orlando Science Center.
“These are paid internship programs with Lockheed,” Bruner said, describing the selection of four interns by Lockheed following interviews. She said foundation outcomes data show students improved in STEM subject areas after camps and programming.
Bruner also noted that the consortium provides matching funds for individual donors up to approximately $104,000, and that the foundation supported teacher appreciation, student clubs and the laptop-for-learners program during the past grant year.
In the CEO’s student highlights, FLVS reported its twelfth Florida Virtual High School graduation at the UCF Arena on May 27. The district presented the class-of-2025 numbers on the record: the graduating class included 1,251 graduates, of whom about 750 participated in the live ceremony; more than 60% of the class graduated with a 3.5 GPA or higher. The district said the projected graduation rate is 96.47%.
The district also reported 27 confirmed and 13 pending Cambridge ACE diploma recipients; the exact tuition benefit percentage for ACE recipients was not specified during the meeting.
Leadership praised teacher and staff efforts in a video and in-person remarks and highlighted a “works of heart” story about an FLVS Flex instructor who supports multilingual students in lab settings.
Board members congratulated graduates and thanked the foundation and staff for student programming and the success reported in the CEO summary.
