PORT ST. JOE, Fla. — The Port St. Joe Planning Board voted unanimously on June 3 to approve a special-exception request allowing homeowner Betty Harden to replace a shed and install a carport at 1906 Cypress Avenue.
Harden told the board she has lived at the address since 1977 and that a shed her late husband built was damaged after a tree fell on it in the 1980s. She said her husband died in September 2023 and that she had open-heart surgery in September 2024. Since then, she arranged removal of the damaged shed and asked to replace it in the same location to accommodate a long-wheelbase truck.
“I’ve been arrested at this location since 1977 ... My husband passed away September 2023,” Harden told the board. She said neighbors had signed forms supporting the replacement in the same spot and that she had submitted those signatures to April in the building department.
Board members asked questions about proximity to neighboring structures and noted a chain-link fence separating the properties. A motion to approve the special exception was made, seconded and carried with unanimous votes; the board recorded the vote as 5-0 in favor, with the chair casting an affirmative vote.
The approval allows Harden to replace the prior structure in substantially the same location; the board did not record additional conditions or permit-specific measurements on the record during the meeting.
