Board members discussed whether district boundaries could be adjusted instead of adding portables, but several trustees said parents resist rezoning and that buying the portables is likely more economical than continued rental. District staff said the three units provide space for roughly 50 students and noted many campuses already use portables; some portables in the district have been in service for a decade or more.
Trustees also discussed operational costs associated with moving portables—power, water, fencing and setup—and cautioned that relocation can be expensive. "If the answer is yes, we're actually saving money by buying this," one trustee said, noting annual rent of approximately $92,000 for three units would make purchase cost-effective over a short period. The motion to purchase carried unanimously.
