The Dickson County Commission on June 2 approved a grant-anticipation note to allow the county to begin work on a FEMA-funded convenience center and bridge repairs while federal funds are routed through the state.
The county mayor explained the overall FEMA award totals about $3,000,000, with Waverly receiving a larger share for its flood recovery; the local portion covers bridge remediation and a new convenience center with an adjoining debris pad to support storm remediation. The mayor said it will take about 120 days for the state to pass funds to the county but that a bidder has agreed to hold a previously accepted bid at its earlier price if the county can proceed now. The immediate project cost the mayor cited was roughly $1,200,000.
“The grant was limited. It was from it's money from the August 21 flood,” the mayor said, referring to storm-related FEMA funding. The mayor told commissioners the convenience center design also serves remediation purposes — it includes space to store storm debris temporarily before it is shipped out — and that feature was necessary for FEMA eligibility.
Commissioner Sitka moved and Commissioner Bridal seconded the motion to approve the grant-anticipation note; commissioners voted in favor by voice vote. The mayor said the county must act to avoid losing an acceptable bid and to preserve the schedule for remediation work.
