Council raises concern about junkyard and overgrowth near downtown rail corridor

During department and council comments on June 2, Councilmember Jernigan raised concern about a junkyard on the right side of downtown across the rail tracks, calling it an “eyesore” and urging the city to pursue cleanup or relocation.
Administration responded that staff had been asked to work on the issue and that removal and cleanup are being pursued where permitted. Councilmembers also flagged heavy growth around the railroad track; staff noted limitations when private entities such as CSX own right-of-way but said they are working to coordinate remediation.
Councilmembers described the downtown appearance as important for business recruitment and visitor impressions and asked administration to continue efforts to address visible blight.
