Independent School students present renewable‑energy projects; council praises civic engagement

Students from the Independent School addressed the Wichita City Council during the public agenda, presenting short projects on renewable and emerging energy ideas including wind, hydroelectric, biomass and solar power.

What students presented: Representatives covered multiple approaches: wind energy and including local considerations such as wildlife impacts and siting; hydroelectric proposals including fish passages and ecological protections; biomass and biogas approaches that emphasize diverting organic waste and capture of methane for energy; and solar energy proposals using perovskite cells, rooftop arrays and community charging infrastructure.

Council response and context: Multiple council members praised the students’ poise and research. Council members urged the students to keep engaging civically, referenced existing city and regional renewable energy work and highlighted city initiatives including electric transit buses, pollinator gardens and wastewater methane capture under study. Staff and council pointed to opportunities for continued involvement and civic‑education resources such as the Civic Engagement Academy and the city’s online sign‑up for public comments.
