At the June 3 Farmers Branch study session staff confirmed the city is purchasing two replacement police vehicles to replace cruisers that were totaled in collisions caused by another party.
Kevin Reinartz, fleet operations manager, told the council the Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool (TML IRP) will reimburse the city for the totaled vehicles, with one payment of $32,000.01 and another of about $31,000. “Right now, we've got a check for $32,000.01 and then, like, 31,000 on the other 1,” Reinartz said. Reinartz described the reimbursements as the full amounts the city expects to receive from the insurer for those units.
Council members asked for clarification to ensure residents understood the replacements were the result of warranted replacement, not discretionary additions to the fleet. Councilman Neal summarized: “Okay. Just so folks know that we're just not arbitrarily buying 2 new, cruisers. It's due to the replacement of, damages done by someone else.” City staff confirmed the replacements are for the totaled vehicles and that insurer reimbursement is expected as described.
The study-session discussion was limited to clarifying the reimbursement amounts and the cause of the loss; the item remained on the consent agenda for regular meeting processing.
