Superintendent: tentative MTA agreement sent to members; May revised budget shows modest changes

Superintendent Dr. Khan told the board the district had finalized a tentative agreement with the Moreland Teachers Association after four bargaining sessions and that the agreement would be sent to association members for a vote beginning May 29 at 5 p.m.
“We did wrap up negotiations a little over a week ago,” Dr. Khan said. “The MTA is presenting that tentative agreement in the hands now of the members who have about 2 weeks or so to review it before they take a vote. It starts on May 29. At 5PM.”
Dr. Khan also reviewed the governor’s May revised budget and highlighted small changes from the January proposal. She said the funded cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) was shown at 2.3%, down slightly from 2.43% in January, and that the governor proposed fully funding transitional kindergarten (TK) at a 10-to-1 ratio rather than the district’s current 12-to-1 ratio.
She added the governor’s discretionary block grant was listed at $1,700,000,000 in the May revision, down from $1,800,000,000 in the January proposal. Dr. Khan said most other elements of the governor’s budget remained intact but cautioned that the legislature could make “tweaks around the edges” before the June budget deadline.
Dr. Khan said the district expects final state revenue numbers after the legislature completes action by mid-June and that the district would communicate details of the tentative agreement and budget implications to staff and families once joint messaging was finalized.
Board members did not take any immediate action during the report; the superintendent’s presentation was informational and directed staff and the board to await the final budget and the teachers’ ratification process.
