Alexander County Senior Center reports growing participation, large med-assist event and record Medicare savings

Christy Hunt, director of the Alexander County Senior Center, reported to the board that participation across center activities is increasing sharply, the site recently hosted a large medication-assistance event and the center achieved high Medicare savings for county residents.
Hunt credited staff and volunteers for rebuilding gardens and facilities and described a slate of programs that have expanded attendance, including computer classes, garden workshops and day trips. She said the med-assist event served roughly 684 people and that over-the-counter medications distributed at the event likely saved the community more than $70,000 in retail costs.
Hunt also reported that the center provided free laptops to 38 seniors through a computer program, hosted a senior celebration with over 120 attendees and ran a successful shred-truck event that destroyed about 4,800 pounds of documents for 184 people. She said Western Piedmont Council of Governments provided 15 fans for distribution to qualifying households and that the center's Medicare savings assistance work placed the county among the top performers in the state for savings achieved last year.
The director asked commissioners to note space constraints as programming expands; she said participation had increased more than 30% year over year and that some monthly counts approach 7,000 uses across programs and online views. The center plans additional events including a Christmas-in-July craft fair, ice-cream socials and more day trips.
The board received the report as informational; staff will continue to coordinate program schedules, partner outreach and volunteer support.
