The Infrastructure Committee authorized a Westwood Neighborhood mill-and-overlay project on May 20, approving an estimated $369,600 in construction funded by the citywide half-cent sales tax.
Public Works Director Steve Groen described the project (CIP project 841097.17) as mill and overlay work with some full-depth patching and curb-and-gutter replacement on sections of Southwest Arnold, Southwest Seventeenth, Southwest Nineteenth and adjoining blocks. Groen said the project will be taken to the governing board for final concurrence and advertised for bids this year; if approved and bid on the planned schedule, construction could occur later this summer or fall.
Councilwoman Ortiz moved approval and Councilwoman Holford seconded. The committee voted to approve the project. Council members asked about the timing and contractor availability; Groen said there has been at least one bidder so far this year on public projects and staff hopes to bid and award the project after the governing body meeting in June.
Public Works said areas requiring full-depth patching will be addressed as needed and that staff will consider timing relative to nearby Washburn University activities to limit disruption.
