Council approves $291,086 in additional operating funds for Hotel Topeka

Deputy City Manager Braxton Copley said the hotel management agreement requires the city to maintain a minimum operating balance of $150,000; at the time of the presentation the account contained about $46,000. "I respectfully ask for approval of this," Copley said, explaining the request is intended to meet contractual requirements and cash-basis laws.
The resolution’s caption did not state the dollar amount because staff said the funding request is conditional on meeting requirements under the management agreement and applicable cash-basis rules. The motion to approve was made by Councilman Neil Dobler and seconded by Deputy Mayor; the council approved the resolution with seven yes votes and three no votes. The meeting minutes recorded Councilmembers Valdivia Acala, Sylvia Ortiz and David Banks as voting no and the motion carried.
City staff said the funds are to keep the hotel operational and in compliance with the management agreement. No additional detail about ongoing operating projections or longer-term funding strategies was presented at the meeting; the item will remain on the city’s fiscal radar for follow-up.
