Council asks Gillespie Center for financial details before considering municipal support

Minnetrista councilors on May 19 agreed staff should request detailed financial and program information from the Gillespie Center before the council considers any contribution of public funds to the nonprofit senior center.
Councilors said they support seniors but need transparent documentation before authorizing city tax dollars. Requests to the center include annual revenues and expenses, revenue streams, program-level financials and other documentation that would show need and how city funds would be used. Council members discussed possible meeting dates (June 16 or a July meeting) depending on when the center can submit information.
Staff said they will work with Gillespie Center contact Rhonda to compile requested documentation; once materials arrive staff will determine whether the item should be scheduled for a work session (short discussion) or a full council meeting with more time for review.
Why it matters: Requests for municipal support to nonprofits raise policy questions about when and how public funds supplement community services. Councilors sought a process and financial transparency before committing resources.
