Granite School District reports summer abatement and construction work at multiple schools

Justin (district facilities staff) gave the Granite School District Board a broad update on summer construction and abatement work across the district, saying major abatement and follow‑on construction started last week at Brockbank and Magna and that crews are working at several other campuses.

The update matters because the district must complete abatement and construction on an accelerated schedule over the summer to reopen buildings and avoid disrupting fall classes. Justin said crews aim to start construction work after required clearance periods and that some work is “hot button” for the summer schedule.

Justin said, “Micah Murphy and her team have been rock stars,” noting district staff coordinated moves out of Brockbank and Magna so abatement could begin. He said abatement at the two sites started last week and that construction teams will follow after clearance certificates are issued. When asked about specific dates, Justin said abatement work is scheduled to begin June 9 pending board approval and that construction crews could start June 19, after a 10‑day clearance period following abatement.

Facilities staff reported other projects under way or planned this summer: flooring at Conlon High School, a three‑phase remodel at Hunter Junior High (reported about 70 percent complete), a nearly finished track at Hunter High awaiting ADA bleacher components, completion of a preschool courtyard, ongoing auditorium lighting work at Cyprus/Cypress High, and a transportation fueling station that is expected to be complete in the next few weeks. A small roofing/drainage item at Churchill Junior requires a change order that Justin said will be brought to the board for approval.

District staff also told the board they are bidding a set of carbon‑monoxide detector installations that state requirements require for schools, and they continue to work on outstanding HVAC items. Valley Crest’s new office, sick room and restroom were shown in photos and are expected to be ready by late July. Justin said the district’s in‑house crews, led by Troy Anderson and others, have completed much of the Hunter Junior remodel.

On change‑order management, Justin said the district tracks changes and follows up with designers when appropriate; he estimated the program is holding change orders to roughly a 2 percent range of project value. He also noted the state auditor had reviewed district project practices and praised the district for scrutinizing change orders.

Direction: staff said they had coordinated with school administrators to avoid blocking community activities and can reroute access where needed. For this summer the district said the priority is completing abatement, finishing critical site drainage and HVAC work, and closing out warranty items so schools are safe and ready when classes resume.
