Chickasaw County approves four part-time EMS hires to address staffing gaps

The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors on June 2 approved hiring three part-time emergency medical technicians and one part-time driver to bolster EMS coverage.
EMS Director Joel Warren presented four applicants to the board and recommended adding three EMTs and a driver to the part-time roster. The board approved the hires with start dates of June 9 and the wages presented by the director: EMT wages ranged $15.66'$15.99 per hour and the part-time driver at $13 per hour.
Warren told the board the department has recurring coverage gaps, particularly during summer months and weekends, and that losing backup providers reduces the service's ability to take paid transfers that provide revenue. He said the four candidates are available on off days from their primary employers and would help daytime and weekend coverage. The board asked that background checks and standard onboarding paperwork be completed before start dates.
A motion to hire the four part-time employees passed on a voice vote.
The board directed the director to submit the applicants' personnel paperwork and start dates to payroll and to monitor whether part-time hours approach thresholds for benefits eligibility, noting the county's target to remain under benefit-qualification hour caps for part-time hires.
