VDOT reports Murray Hill bridge detour, summer surface treatments and other local highway work

Hughes said a bridge replacement on Murray Hill Drive requires a detour expected to last about three weeks; signage is in place. She said VDOT will perform about 35 miles of surface treatment this summer and has adjusted signal timing and patterns on the Daniels Creek Road/Virginia Avenue pedestrian project to allow left turns and straights to proceed in different stages.
Hughes described a planned short right-turn lane at Route 87 at the intersection with Route 220 to address corner-cutting and a separate small right-turn lane requested by the high school at Soapstone Road once the Route 87 work is complete. She also described continued work at the McDonald's/Bassett/Fork/BoJangles intersection to install turn lanes and a splitter island to discourage through movements across Route 220.
Board members raised local maintenance concerns including tree trimming on narrow roads, debris from the ice storm, and a recurring pothole issue on Old Stage Road (Route 798). Hughes said those items are on lists for attention and that primary-road mowing is prioritized to be completed by Memorial Day, with secondary roads to follow; recent rains have slowed mowing operations.
Hughes said most mowing this year is being performed with state forces and that VDOT will attempt to coordinate trash pickup timing with county crews where possible. She invited residents to report specific issues; board members asked staff to provide follow-up where coordination is needed.
