Board approves new college-and-career peer‑leader course at La Canada High

La Canada Unified School District trustees approved a new course, Foundations of College and Career Peer Leaders, to be offered at La Canada High School in 2025–26. The course formally recognizes the school’s existing peer‑mentor program (the C3 leaders) by converting the prior teacher‑assistant/volunteer model into an a‑g academic elective that the University of California has pre‑approved as an academic elective.
College and career counselor Lisa Chung told the board the peer leaders have already run 30 events this school year and provide presentations and one‑on‑one help with FAFSA, resumes and applications. Students previously received five TA credits and listed the role as an extracurricular activity on applications; the new course will allow seniors to earn a transcripted a‑g elective, strengthening their senior‑year academic program.
Trustees asked about safeguards against misinformation when students advise peers; Chung said students take a pretest and are trained to refer complicated financial‑aid or specialized questions back to counselors. The board discussed workload for the counseling staff and how the peer leaders will be scheduled so the program does not overburden counselors.
The motion to adopt the course passed unanimously.
