Council office staff used the Executive Committee meeting on June 3 to summarize meeting‑length data, training opportunities and ongoing administrative projects, and the committee recorded several future agenda suggestions including a discussion of an ordinance to set meeting end times and a review of boards, commissions and committees (BCC) appointment practices.
Staff said the legislative analyst reviewed council meetings from January 2024 to present and categorized time spent on staff presentations, public comment and discussion. The presentation reported that meeting lengths rose during the pandemic and have not fully returned to pre‑pandemic averages. Staff encouraged alders to review the council new business summaries and use district blogs, office hours and neighborhood engagement to reduce the need for lengthy council‑floor explanations.
Staff also flagged training and administrative items: an APM 3‑5 training moved online and scheduled for June 30; an upcoming all‑alder retreat (dates to be finalized); and ongoing work to streamline boards, commissions and committee processes and training for BCC staff. The City Equity and Social Justice manager requested Fall training on ResJ (Racial Equity and Social Justice) analysis practices; staff indicated they would follow up on scheduling.
During the future‑agenda segment, alder Lankella asked about adding an ordinance to limit meeting length or set an end time; the committee agreed to place it on the future agenda list. Alder Tishler asked for a future discussion of BCC appointment structure and potential changes to committee sizes before reappointments are made later in the year; staff said they would add that item.
No votes were required for the office update. The meeting concluded with a unanimous recorded vote to adjourn.
