Harris County School District officials presented the first of two required public hearings on the tentative FY26 budget, describing an all-funds total of about $92,000,000 compared with roughly $88,000,000 the prior year.
Finance staff said the increase reflects all funds (general fund, federal funds and state grants) and results mainly from rising personnel costs, health-care increases and TRS (Teachers Retirement System) measurement factors. The budget presentation said the district had earlier projected a possible shortfall caused largely by state-driven costs but that the $92 million draft is intended to meet anticipated shortfalls and provide required operating revenue for FY26.
No members of the public signed up to speak at the hearing. Board members acknowledged the continuing budget challenge and noted the district will hold a second legally required hearing the following Thursday and then consider approval of a final FY26 budget at the regular meeting next week. During the hearing, a board member identified a typographical error in the materials; staff corrected it and said updated slides would be circulated to board members.
A motion to adjourn the FY26 public budget hearing was made and seconded; the board voted to adjourn the hearing without further public comment.
