The Peninsula School District Board of Directors approved a new social‑emotional climate policy (Policy 3112) on June 3 and asked staff to produce implementing procedures that would integrate school climate surveys, family engagement and site improvement planning.
Superintendent Barr explained the next step would be development of procedures and involvement of cabinet and site leaders in crafting implementation: "The procedures don't just sit on my desk and that we rubber stamp everything," she told the board, adding that the procedures would be fleshed out with building leaders and staff.
Staff described planned connections between the policy and other district systems. James Kentonwein said the procedure could codify the district’s family and student survey work and link results to school improvement plans and ongoing climate work: "This procedure is gonna be a great way for us to really kind of codify some of the individual pieces that we've been putting into place around family input," he said.
Board members discussed ensuring the policy would not be a one‑off and urged that survey cycles, student focus groups, and family engagement be ongoing and reportable. Staff said the district will use the Center for Education Effectiveness (CEE) survey platform to collect annual climate measures from students, staff and families and will publish updates and site-level plans on the curriculum/adoption website.
The board approved the second reading of policy 3112 by voice vote after a short discussion. Staff said they will return with the first draft of written procedures, a timeline for survey administration, and how the policy's implementation will be tracked at the school level.
