Commission defers Pine Street speed-hump request for fire-department review

A resident commenter and commissioners noted concerns about speeding and children in the neighborhood; the fire department’s representative said the department generally opposes large speed humps because of potential damage to fire apparatus and suspension systems. “Opposition is we don't really want them because of damage it does to the apparatus. The chief's been pretty adamant about that,” the fire representative said.
Commissioners discussed alternative responses including stepped-up police enforcement and smaller traffic-calming measures used elsewhere. One commissioner asked staff to email the fire chief for an explicit recommendation; another moved to defer the item until the next meeting after fire-department review. The motion to defer was seconded and approved.
The deferral means staff will bring back the Pine Street request with the fire department’s written position and possible alternative traffic-calming options for the commission to consider after the summer recess.
