Council, staff and parks committee to resume work on comprehensive parks plan and park improvements

Councilmembers on June 2 urged action to finish the comprehensive parks plan and discussed a county grant opportunity that would produce permitted project plans for future funding. Steve Johnston requested a parks meeting to move outstanding items forward; city staff said the city has provided required information to the consultant and expects to schedule remaining tasks once additional details from the pool and parks departments are gathered.
Dustin Conroy summarized a grant that targets Middle League Park and related improvements. He said the grant’s intent is to produce permitted projects that are “ready to go” for potential funding, and listed potential improvements including benches, picnic tables, a covered picnic area, underground sprinklers for play fields, future lighting and security cameras. Conroy said the grant is intended to create a menu of permitted projects so that if funding later becomes available, the city can move quickly to implement individual items.
Parks committee members discussed numerous smaller operational issues — broken water fountains, restroom maintenance, picnic tables, shade trees and regular maintenance tasks — and agreed to schedule a parks committee meeting to identify priorities and coordinate with staff. The committee planned to follow up by email to set a meeting time and to include park maintenance staff in discussions.
