The Montpelier City Board of Abatement approved its consent agenda, clearing several small personal-property tax items and the tax collector’s annual expense, during a regular meeting.
Board Chair and Mayor Jack McCullough called the approval after staff described the items as housekeeping. "These are housekeeping things," the tax collector said, explaining most accounts at issue are 80-801 personal-property accounts and often small dollar amounts tied to name changes or flood impacts.
The packet included three categories of requests: a name-change correction (NorthStar/Northern Leasing identified as the same business), an abatement for a New Jersey leasing company that provided proof it had no equipment in Montpelier for the years in question, and several flood-related personal-property abatements tied to businesses or individuals affected by the 2023 floods. Staff said the assessed amounts were minor and that, in one instance, the assessor’s office raises an account by 20% when a required personal-property filing is not returned by the April 20 deadline.
Board members voiced no opposition and the chair called the consent agenda approved by voice vote.
The approval clears administrative work from the tax roll and allows staff to proceed with bookkeeping and billing corrections. No new policy or change to abatement standards was proposed in the motion.
