The City Council approved an ad hoc Major Events committee June 3 to advise staff and coordinate city readiness for upcoming regional events including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl 2027 and the 2028 Olympic period.
Council Member Kjelldorf proposed the committee to harness local volunteer expertise and reduce staff workload; she said the group would meet quarterly and establish working groups to address topics such as short‑term rental policy, facility use for training, public‑safety coordination and business development. "We have a lot of resources in town to maybe help a very limited staff in addressing some things proactively," she said.
Council discussion emphasized keeping the committee focused and reasonably sized to remain effective. Several members suggested limiting the core membership but allowing broader working‑group input from the Chamber of Commerce, Arts & Culture Committee and sports or hospitality stakeholders. Staff will support the committee and return any policy recommendations to the full council for formal action when required.
