The Rosemount City Council recognized Dylan Tate, a Dakota County 4‑H member, Tuesday after the council read a proclamation and invited Tate to speak about earning the 4‑H Key Award.
Tate told the council the Key Award is the highest distinction a 4‑H member can earn and credited the program with teaching responsibility, leadership and community service. He described beginning in a dairy project and later founding high school clubs for STEM communication and neuroscience; he also said 4‑H experiences led to research collaborations and opportunities in science and technology.
Tate said he will attend the University of Minnesota on a full scholarship and intends to study medicine with plans to pursue neurosurgery. He thanked his family, club leaders and the community for support and received applause from council members and attendees.
The council also used the moment to note the breadth of youth programming in the community: staff noted Dakota County's large 4‑H participation and the mayor read a proclamation recognizing June as Small Cities Month.
Tate's remarks were delivered as a presentation item; no council action was required.
