Commission approves $90,000 amendment for Eighth Avenue stormwater engineering support

On June 3 the Deerfield Beach City Commission approved an amendment to the professional services agreement with Craig A. Smith & Associates LLC to provide continued engineering and construction support for the Eighth Avenue stormwater capital improvement project in an amount not to exceed $90,000.
Eric Power, director of plan development services, told the commission the contract is time-based and that the project had exceeded the original time allotment. He said staff expects paving to occur within a few months, weather permitting, followed by landscape reinstallation and a resident tree-selection program.
Members of the public pressed for total project costs and explanations for change orders. Katie Freitag and Dan Herz asked for the project's cumulative cost and for reasons for multiple amendments; Power said staff would work to complete the project and asked for patience while rain and other factors delayed final work.
Commissioners acknowledged resident frustration about the extended timeline and asked staff to hold contractors to completion schedules. The motion to approve the $90,000 amendment was made by Commissioner Mary Hudak, seconded by Vice Mayor Todd Preston, and passed unanimously by roll call.
