Council member Alora Hernandez read the proclamation recognizing Pride Month and the historical roots of the movement, and called for reaffirmation of the city’s commitment to equality and protection against discrimination. A Diversity Collective representative identified as Celia spoke at the podium and described the organization’s work on workforce development, veteran services and youth resources across Ventura County. “Being trans is who I am,” Celia said. “But I want to be a good human being, and that’s why we care about the community.”
Speakers from Diversity Collective and allied groups urged the council to authorize a community gathering for a flag raising and to publicize local resources for LGBTQ+ youth and veterans, noting that one affirming adult can dramatically reduce a young person’s risk of self‑harm. The council recessed the proclamation presentation for photographs and thanked the organization for its work.
The exchange included personal testimony from an audience member who said she had lost a son to suicide and wished she had known about available resources earlier; council members and staff thanked the visitors and highlighted planned outreach.
