District 204 outlines multi‑year student handbook overhaul, plans digital accessibility and June finalization

Lyons Township High School District 204 administrators told the board Tuesday they are updating the district student handbook to align language and organization with recent policy updates and to make the handbook easier for families and students to use, and that a revised draft will return for board action on June 16.

The district said the handbook revision began several years earlier to consolidate piecemeal sections and editorial language that had accumulated. Jennifer Rosenberg, legal counsel, advised the board that inserting full board policy language into the handbook (rather than paraphrasing policy) reduces the chance of editorial conflicts when policies are later updated. Administrators said the handbook will remain a living document and that some policy‑driven changes will be swapped in after final board action on press updates.

Administrators described practical accessibility steps: converting the handbook to a Google Doc to enable automated translation options for families, while noting the district will test access because some users or devices may be unable to open Google Docs. The district said it will keep a downloadable PDF copy for families who cannot access the live document and will provide multilingual support as required.

Administrators also said they will continue established practices for student acknowledgement of handbook rules: school personnel will provide and review key sections with students at the start of the year and families will be notified of major changes. The board asked whether the handbook will require acknowledgments; administrators confirmed that APs and school staff already walk students through key rules and that families and students are expected to review handbook material each year.
