Scituate School Committee completes reorganization; clerk, vice chair and secretarial roles filled

The Scituate School Committee held a reorganization session during which members nominated and elected officers for one-year terms, filling the positions of vice chair, clerk and secretary and establishing an interim secretarial arrangement.

The reorganization is required annually after elections; the committee conducted nominations from the floor, followed by roll-call votes. The committee elected Maria Fenwick to serve as vice chair and Melanie Coogan as clerk. Peter Gates was nominated and approved as secretary, but he told the committee he must obtain employer approval before formally accepting; the committee arranged for interim coverage and named Dr. Borkoski as a backup secretary.

Committee members said the process followed the standard reorganization practice for Scituate Public Schools, with nominations made from the floor and election by majority roll-call vote. The superintendent opened the meeting and called for nominations; after voting the newly elected vice chair assumed duties for that office. Members announced clerk and secretarial votes by roll call, with the recorded “yes” votes entered into the minutes.

Several members discussed the mechanics of filling the secretary role when an appointee needs outside approval. The committee temporarily designated an interim secretary to ensure minutes and signatures are handled while the nominee seeks employer permission. No formal policy change was proposed; members said the interim arrangement was intended to provide continuity.

Members also confirmed the committee will continue customary practices for annual reorganization: officers serve one-year terms or until successors are elected, and nominations will continue to be made from the floor. The superintendent and newly elected officers closed the organizational portion and moved the meeting into the regular agenda.
