Members of the Town of Lake Placid Utility Advisory Board discussed whether future sewer work should favor gravity systems where feasible and low-pressure (pressure) sewer elsewhere, but the board did not adopt a binding recommendation at this meeting.
Staff and board members agreed gravity systems are a long-established approach, but engineering and cost considerations often make low-pressure systems less expensive in the town’s flat, variable-topography service area. Utility staff said low-pressure systems typically cost less to install in many locations; gravity may be chosen “where it makes sense and is reasonably economical.”
Several motions were introduced: one member initially moved to install gravity where feasible and low-pressure elsewhere; a revised motion sought approval “with conditions” allowing the board to sit down with design engineers to review feasibility and cost. The revised motion was seconded and discussed, including public comments about cost differences in other nearby projects. After further discussion several members withdrew earlier proposals and no final recommendation was adopted; a later motion to approve the DEP grant gravity/low-pressure recommendation failed for lack of a second.
Board members asked staff and design consultants to present comparative cost estimates (gravity vs. low-pressure) for specific neighborhoods before the board takes a final position. Staff also emphasized maintenance and life-cycle considerations — noting that pumps and control panels (for pressure systems) carry ongoing maintenance costs while gravity systems have different long-term maintenance profiles.
Outcome: No formal board position was adopted at the meeting. Staff will continue to work with engineers on site-specific recommendations and cost comparisons and will return options to the board for future action.
