The Homewood City Public Safety Committee on June 2 carried over consideration of safety issues at the Oxmoor Street and Saint Charles intersection after members said more community canvassing and budget discussions are needed before final action.
Committee members said the matter, which was referred by City Manager Glenn Adams, will require a fuller review of enforcement options, residential-permit parking and potential fines before the committee returns a recommendation.
Committee members said canvassing is under way and that the ad hoc group reviewing the neighborhood includes members of the community police department and the Safe Streets program, though the group does not currently include a business owner from the affected area. Councilor Nelms said canvassers plan to return to the neighborhood “tomorrow” to gather more responses about which residents want a residential parking environment; the committee did not set a final deadline for reporting results.
Discussion focused on enforcement mechanics and second- and third-order effects, including how penalties would be structured and the scope of enforcement. Councilor Nelms framed the next steps as moving the topic into the city’s budget cycle so that enforcement and fines could be properly funded and implemented.
No formal policy was adopted. The committee voted earlier in the meeting to approve the May 19 public safety committee minutes, with Councilor Nelms moving and Councilor Hardin seconding the motion; the minutes were approved 3–0. The item on Oxmoor Street and Saint Charles (agenda item 340425) was carried over for further development and will return to a future committee meeting for additional public input and staff recommendations.
Committee members asked staff to collect and present any engineer feedback and community canvass results at the next appearance of the item. The committee did not make any final decisions about permit rules, fine amounts or enforcement staffing.
The committee adjourned after carrying the item forward; members indicated that additional neighborhood outreach and budget-level discussion will inform any future recommendation to the City Council.
