The finance committee approved funds to survey Cobb Street and the adjacent right-of-way to determine whether a new right-turn lane and sidewalk can be implemented and to estimate costs for budgeting.
Supporters said the survey is the first step in planning a more comprehensive Cobb Street improvement that may include a right-turn lane near a traffic signal and new sidewalks. Staff explained the survey will assess current right-of-way boundaries—staff suspect the street has shifted toward development—and will identify which side of the roadway can best accommodate a sidewalk.
Staff and councilors noted ALDOT (Alabama Department of Transportation) involvement would be required for work affecting state-owned right-of-way or signals, and that implementation could be years away depending on coordination and funding. The motion to approve the survey and initial engineering work passed on the committee floor; the vote was recorded as the ayes having it, 3–0.
