The Homewood City Finance Committee on June 2 approved funding for a survey and engineering to study a potential right-turn lane and sidewalk on Cobb Street.
Councilor Woolverton (item sponsor), Public Works staff and the city manager discussed the need for a survey now so the city can obtain engineering documents and cost estimates ahead of the budget cycle. Staff said the roadway may have shifted over time and the survey will clarify right-of-way boundaries and where sidewalks could be placed.
Staff warned the project could require Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) coordination because portions of the corridor involve state right-of-way; staff said ALDOT involvement could affect schedule and scope. The survey will also identify physical constraints such as signal pole locations and storm drains that could affect feasibility.
The committee approved the motion to fund the survey and engineering work; the vote was 3-0. Staff said the survey is the first step to produce bid-ready documents and a construction cost estimate for future budget consideration.
