Senate Concurrent Resolution 38, creating a Task Force on Career Alignment to study and recommend ways to connect public college and university students to careers in Louisiana, was reported favorably by the House Education Committee with amendments.
Chairman Edmonds told the committee the task force responds to concerns about outward migration of graduates. He cited a McKinsey report for LED showing roughly 40% of those leaving the state after college hold bachelor’s degrees and often move to Texas. Kim Hunter-Reid, Commissioner of Higher Education, said the task force will identify best practices to “realign career services” so career planning is an early and ongoing part of college rather than a last-semester thought.
The committee adopted an amendment adding the president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana as a task-force member. The resolution requires the task force to produce an interim report in 2026 and a final report in 2027 and asks institutions to report on accountability measures once best practices are identified.
Stakeholders from economic-development organizations, higher education and workforce groups supported the measure; committee members moved to report SCR 38 favorably as amended.
