Two Madison residents asked the board on June 2 to encourage the Planning and Zoning Commission to move its June 16 meeting to the Brown Gym to accommodate more attendees.
Lisa Ferguson, 718 East Second Street, said she worried the meeting room would be limited by fire-code capacity and that holding the meeting in a larger gym would allow citizens to be present in greater numbers. "I just feel like as a democracy, we deserve to, like, have a room full of people and not, you know, be hindered by the fire codes," she told the board.
Jan Vacherous, 701 East Second Street, echoed the request and said the Brown Gym has microphones and camera capability and that local volunteers could operate filming equipment. "It's not just about watching it on TV. It's about being able to ask questions. It's being able to see more of the drawings," Vacherous said.
A board member noted the city streams meetings on YouTube to increase access and said organizers prefer to keep the meeting at its regular location because of presentation technology; board members encouraged residents to use the streaming option if they cannot attend in person.
No formal action was taken by the Board of Public Works and Safety on the venue request; the remarks were made during the public-comment portion of the meeting.
