Mayor reports riverfront recovery from flooding, park repairs and summer events underway

Madison’s mayor reported to the Board of Public Works and Safety on June 2 that the city’s riverfront recovery after recent flooding is progressing and that Memorial Day weekend events drew strong attendance.
The mayor thanked city teams and volunteers for work to reopen public spaces and said many community members observed little evidence of recent flood damage. He said Crystal Beach and the campground have reopened and that downtown businesses have been busy with warm weather events. “I wanna, again, extend a lot of gratitude for all the city teams who have worked so diligently over the last 7, 8 weeks to bring our riverfront back,” the mayor said.
The mayor noted remaining repairs at Hargan Matthews Park and said playground users can use Welch Park and Gaines Park, playgrounds on the hilltop and basketball courts at Crystal Beach while repairs continue. He also highlighted partnerships that sped restoration, including a grant and partner organizations that helped reopen the comfort station on Main Street.
Board members praised recent work on downtown public bathrooms and the comfort station. The mayor said the city is preparing for summer events, including July 4 and music-in-the-park series, and reiterated that volunteers, businesses and city staff are key to event success.
No formal actions were taken on flood recovery during the meeting; the mayor’s remarks were informational and forward-looking.
