Council renews Downtown Municipal Service District contract with Downtown Raleigh Alliance after public support

Larry Miller, president of Glenwood South Neighborhood Collaborative, praised DRA’s ambassador program and small-business support and said the city “is fortunate to have DRA around to provide these services.” Skip Hill of Highwoods Properties and Anna Grace Fitzgerald, owner of Copper Line Plant Company, also spoke in favor, citing DRA’s clean-and-safe ambassadors, social workers and storefront grants.
After public comment, a council member moved to direct staff to negotiate and proceed with a contract with DRA. The motion passed by voice vote: the council recorded the motion, “All in favor… aye,” and the chair said, “All opposed, nay. So the ayes have it.”
Why it matters: The contract funds services—ambassadors, clean-and-safe programs and small-business support—that speakers said reduce crime, assist people experiencing homelessness and help downtown businesses. The approval authorizes staff to finalize contract terms and continue partnering with the DRA.
