Woodland Park DDA highlights microgrant results and reimagining workshop turnout

Board members at a recent Woodland Park Downtown Development Authority meeting reported early, visible results from the DDA’s microgrant program and strong public engagement around a downtown reimagining project.
Board chair Born noted the repainting of a local antique store funded by microgrant money and said passersby told her the change “really changes the look of the Main Street.” Aaron, a city staff member, told the board the first reimagining open house was “very well attended” and estimated “at least a hundred people” participated.
Aaron said the open house provided preliminary visioning and that plans remain “preliminary still in nature.” He said the advisory committee would meet again the same day and that another open house is scheduled at the end of the month. He also said the community survey tied to the reimagining effort is open through June 4.
Board members reported other microgrant-funded work, including patio improvements at a local business that planned a soft opening. The board discussed whether permitting or city processes were holding projects up; staff and members said most microgrant projects would not require permits and that weather and a short mountain building season were likelier causes of slow starts.
Logan Simpson and the Parks and Recreation Department are the project leads for the reimagining effort, Aaron said, and local media (Fox 21) covered the open house. The DDA also noted 33 microgrant approvals listed on the back of the meeting agenda; two DDA items (an approximately $11,000 grant request for two applicants and a $20,000 legal expense correction) were scheduled to go to the city council for first reading and final approval on June 19, pending council action.
Board members signed completion forms for applicants who had finished work and encouraged continued outreach to businesses to accelerate projects, while recognizing the limits of city authority over weather and construction-season constraints.
