Commission renames downtown sculpture show to Unmistakable Public Art Exhibition; discusses timing and awards schedule

The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission voted June 14 to rename the Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition (ODSE) the Unmistakable Public Art Exhibition, abbreviated UPAE, and discussed when to stage the event and related activities.
Commissioner Kelly moved to approve the new name, and Tim seconded. The commission approved the motion on a roll-call vote; commissioners recorded as approving included Marlo, Tim, Alicia, Kelly and Chair Daniel Smith.
Commissioners and staff said the new name reflects that the annual exhibition is no longer limited to outdoor downtown sculptures. Daniel Smith said the commission discussed timing for an opening and whether to hold a “Final Friday” event in June or to delay a walking-tour style opening until cooler fall weather. Staff noted that some installation work can be completed by mid-June, but that heat and the recent loss of the visitor center may make a fall event more comfortable and better attended.
Staff also said they plan to launch nominations for the Phoenix Awards on June 1 and that, following discussion, the commission is likely to move the Phoenix Awards ceremony to December rather than October this year. The commission discussed a performative piece by the Bridal Group and said timing for performance pieces is flexible depending on weather.
Separately, staff said their regular June meeting may shift from June 11 to June 18 because a staff member is slated to attend a national Americans for the Arts conference. Commissioners tentatively agreed to hold the regular June meeting on June 18 at 7:30 p.m., pending calendar confirmation.
No formal vote was taken on the opening date for the UPAE; commissioners asked staff to pursue a mix of individual artist events and a possible fall walking-tour opening to balance heat concerns with public interest.
