The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission voted June 14 to adopt a shorter mission statement that retains support for artists and arts education while removing a reference to “an environment of aesthetic vitality.”
Commission Chair Daniel Smith read both the existing and proposed statements during the meeting. The old text read: “The mission (purpose) of the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission is to support and nurture artists and enhance the community by promoting cultural opportunities and arts education while nurturing an environment of aesthetic vitality.” The proposed replacement reads: “The mission of the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission is to support and nurture artists and enhance the community by promoting cultural opportunities and arts education.”
Commissioner Marlo moved to approve the revised mission and Tim seconded. The motion passed on a roll-call vote; commissioners recorded as approving included Marlo, Tim, Alicia, Kelly and Aisha, and Chair Daniel Smith.
The commission did not attach additional policy direction to the change during the meeting. The revised wording will be used in commission materials and outreach going forward.
