Resident asks Mesa council to hold public forum on 287(g) ICE memorandum of agreement

Mueller said she appreciated prior staff communications and asked for more direct community engagement so residents could ask questions and receive clarification about how the program operates in Mesa. “I respectfully request that the city council, city staff, and the police department commit to meeting directly with community members and organizations to discuss the memorandum of agreement between the Mesa Police Department and the United States immigration and customs enforcement under section 287(g),” she said.
Mueller asked that the steering committee’s next meeting date be provided to the public and that the council “formally agendize” the topic so the city’s role and oversight could be discussed in a public forum. No formal council action was taken during the meeting; the item was presented as a citizen request for engagement and transparency.
