Mayor Jim Farrell read a mayoral proclamation declaring June as National Gun Violence Awareness Month and encouraged community support for efforts to prevent gun violence and to aid survivors.
Selena Taylor, who identified herself as the mother of Ezra Nehemiah Taylor — a local man killed in a 2021 shooting — accepted the proclamation and urged the city to turn words into action. "He deserved to live out his dreams," Taylor said. She called for investment in youth programs, trauma support for families and expanded prevention work in schools.
Her mother, Betty Taylor, also spoke and thanked the city for backing gun-safety efforts. The mayor noted a city gun-safe giveaway is scheduled for June 7. The chief of police confirmed the event starts at 9 a.m. and that distribution will continue "when we give out about 500 gun safes." The proclamation on the record declared support for honoring victims and encouraging community efforts to prevent gun violence.
Council members and staff present encouraged residents to participate in awareness events, wear orange on the national day, and support local survivor and prevention groups.
