Council authorizes property acquisition for South 280th Street road diet and Pacific Highway non-motorized corridor

Both ordinances declare public use and necessity, direct staff to pursue negotiation with property owners and authorize condemnation proceedings if negotiations fail. Council members moved and seconded the measures and the council passed them unanimously.
During discussion Council member Rhonda asked how condemnation letters were sent and whether recipients signed for notice. EJ Walsh, public-works director, said the condemnation agent handles the notices and that the letters are sent by certified mail and also advertised in the paper. "Everything that we have done has been properly noticed," Walsh said.
The ordinances instruct staff and the city attorney to proceed with reasonable negotiation efforts and to initiate condemnation actions if purchase attempts are unsuccessful. No specific settlement amounts were disclosed during the meeting; staff said they would continue outreach and negotiation with affected owners.
