The Kingston Select Board reviewed a management representation letter for the 2023 audit and did not sign it at the June 2 meeting, asking staff to obtain and insert a disclaimer before the chair and vice chair sign the document.
A draft of the audit and the representation letter was before the board. Ellen objected to a paragraph that includes a signature line implying the signer had performed certain management functions during the audit period. "Since I wasn't a selectman at the time, I think it's inaccurate to put my name in this," Ellen said, noting she could not truthfully confirm day-to-day management activities that predated her tenure.
Board members discussed signature logistics and agreed the board chair and vice chair would sign the representation letter, provided the auditors include a standard statement noting that a named finance staff member or other former employee is no longer with the town and that the current signers are confirming statements to the best of their knowledge.
The board directed Susan to request an amended management representation letter with the requested disclaimer from the auditors; the board agreed the chair and vice chair would sign after the auditors supply the revised language.
No vote was taken; the board set the follow-up as a next step prior to executing the audit documents.
