Northampton partnership considers developer forum, cites regional housing production goals

The Northampton Housing Partnership on June 2 discussed reviving a developer-focused forum or symposium aimed at increasing housing production and connecting local builders with funding sources, with members proposing fall planning and potential regional scope.
Housing Partnership member Keith (staff member) said the idea of a developer forum has been part of prior conversations but is not yet beyond concept. "It's not really past the idea phase at this point," Keith said, urging further planning and possible fall timing.
Member Heath (Housing Partnership member) said a forum could address how state funding for new development flows to communities like Northampton and whether the city can play a role in supporting developers. "A workshop or summit with developers in the city to think about the monies that are out there... might be a way to frame some sort of workshop or summit with developers in the city to think about the monies that are out there," Heath said.
Members also referenced neighboring Amherst’s housing production planning, noting Amherst’s plan calls for about 700–900 additional units by 2030. "Amherst housing plan calls for 7 to 900 new units by 2030," a participant said, and Partnership members suggested that a regional perspective could be useful because many housing pressures cross municipal boundaries.
Several members suggested the forum could include information on state funding sources, incentives for small landlords, and practical development questions. The Partnership agreed to keep the idea on its agenda, to consult planning staff for possible formats and timing, and to consider regional partners and developers in the invitation list.
No formal motion was made; members instructed staff to follow up with the planning department to develop a proposed agenda for a fall event.
